A week or so ago, we were both sitting there tapping away on our laptops in our own little worlds, when K began to play some music…a familiar song, but as the song continued, something sounded off. I didn’t think much of it at first and then she said, ‘I really like this song!’ Without paying much attention, I asked who it was by, ‘Darius Rucker‘ was the answer. (Yes, of Hootie fame.) It took me a minute to recognize the song she was playing. Then after a few seconds, I realized it was ‘Wagon Wheel’ (originally, and performed far better in my opinion, by Old Crow Medicine Show). I immediately balked at her love for the less than stellar cover of one of my favorite classic songs! And admonished her for shooting me down just 2 years ago when I insisted we use it in our wedding! Now, she was suddenly acting like it was Darius Rucker’s newest jam and it was amazing. If I recall correctly, I dramatically threw my hands down on the table and exclaimed , ‘You’re killing me!’
But, recently, I stumbled upon a fantastic Beyonce cover song (yes, Beyonce! See below.) and I figured it’s not fair if I don’t exercise some full disclosure here. Because, I totally love cover songs! Obsessed actually. Cover songs are fine and can be totally awesome new spins on songs, but my big caveat here is that you should at least know who the original artist was! And as much as I love my spouse more than anything in the world, it drives me crazy when people think a cover song is the newest thing since sliced bread. (Now, I may come off a little music elitist in today’s post but for some balance I will fully admit to my Backstreet Boys and Spice Girls roots, so I’m not even going to pretend to be the authority on good music, these are just my silly little opinions!)
I remember when Fred Durst released a cover of The Who’s ‘Behind Blue Eyes‘ and I died little inside. God forbid people think that is a Limp Bizkit original! But, GOOD cover songs, on the other hand, I’m all over it! Because I’m not going to lie, Johnny Cash’s cover of Nine Inch Nail’s ‘Hurt’ was pretty darn good! And everyone under the sun covers The Band’s ‘The Weight’ and there are some great versions out there. So, at the end of the day, I can’t fault Katrina for loving on Darius Rucker’s cover really. I can’t fault her because I love good cover song too! And granted, I may get on my high horse now and again, demanding people recognize the original artist behind the music, I totally love me a good cover and have a slew of fantastic cover songs to share today!
Some of my favorite covers:
Butch Walker’s take on Taylor Swift
Walk Off the Earth covering Gotye (and Taylor Swift…I swear I don’t just have an obsession with T. Swift covers!)
Cat Power taking Phil Phillips to a whole new level
Anya Marina’s take on T.I.
Branches killing Beyonce’s ‘Halo’
These are just a few of the many I love! But. how do you feel about cover songs? What are some of your favorites?
